seoul searching
i can’t believe i’m here in seoul. just a couple days earlier i was in chicago and now i’m in a completely foreign city where everyone looks like john park or jenny choi. just kidding. not EVERYONE looks like them. there are a few who look like dennis kim. ha ha ha. so my secret is out – i only have 3 korean friends. again i lie. anyhoo landed safely and completely exhausted. so much so that i spent my first 12 hours asleep while anna and linda enjoyed a big korean dinner without me. i was passed out and all i wanted to do was curl up into a fetal position and sleep. seoul is a bustling modern city where no one wants to crack a smile. space is limited. buses roam the streets. and streets apparently do not have names. people get around by knowing landmarks. everything is in korean. it’s been great hangin out with my good ol’ buddy from undergrad and former 2Tongues manager miss linda kwon. she’s still crazy and lives in a weird time warp where she thinks there’s enough time to do everything. back in school folks use to confuse the two of us all the time though we looked nothing alike. yeah we were the only 2 asian american artsy women with short bobbed hair dressed in all black who always came to class late and intimidated others but why would anyone confuse us. we don’t all look alike…well…except for the koreans. ha ha ha. j/k. food is plenty. and you get even more ban chan – those cute appetizer dishes before the main meal. obviously there are thousands of korean restaurants but would you believe there are also plenty of subways, mcdonalds, pizza huts, baskin robins, 7-11s, dominos, papa johns, kfc, dunkin donuts, tgif, bennigan’s, outback steakhouse, crispy cremes…can we say – what da fuck!!! is this seoul or little america? neon signs everywhere along with stalls for foods and street vendors who sell all sorts of goods – edible, wearable, usable, reusable and etc. it’s been great meeting up with linda, julayne and other korean americans living here. i hear annie koh is here too. my performance is friday at Aura’s and i’m super psyched. the space looks awesome. saw my name on the banner outside the bar/club this evening. linda’s roommate is an ultimate fighter and i saw my first 2 ultimate fight events. it’s gory and made my stomach turn. i had stinky yucky shit afterwards. so i’ll leave y’all with that image.
take a look at my journey thus far through my photos from day1 and day2 in seoul
