It’s sad that this generation has been sucker punched into loving the ‘Twilight’ vampire series of books. Forget that another book with a similar title was written by Anna Deavere Smith many moons ago. Her book was a collection of stories/monologues from the LA riots in 1992 and one of the first to humanize Korean shopkeepers in the aftermath of the violence.
As if you didn’t have enough reasons to hate ‘Twilight.’ As if it’s not bad enough that the main vampirical dude is a total stalker. As if it’s not bad enough that the female lead is a complete weakling reliant on an obsessively possessive relationship. As if we haven’t had enough of the same ol’ twisted heterosexual white relationship veiled as some kind of universal epic love story. The whole ‘Twilight’ series is bullshit and it doesn’t help that white writers continue to appropriate at the expense of native peoples. And it sucks that millions are buying into all of it.
According to the NYT: It’s important to point out that the outside uses of the Quileute name, from the “Twilight” books to the tattoo jewelry, are quite likely legal. American intellectual property laws, except in very specific circumstances, do not protect indigenous peoples’ collective cultural property. In fact, many businesses use tribal names without involving the Indians themselves. Consider, for example, well-known products like Jeep Cherokee trucks, Oneida flatware and Apache helicopters — none of which are officially associated with Indian tribes. (The Quileute say they have never been contacted by Ms. Meyer or any of those who use the Quileute name for merchandising.)

This little short is called “Dumb Professor” by Randall Park. It made me LMFAO! Maybe it’s because i’m at this elitist institution where tenure is golden.

oh god – wtf – there’s ugly then there’s fugly! lots of misses coming out of Paris Fashion week for the Spring 2010 line:

Karl Lagerfield is doing retro-mickey-mouse-in pastel for Chanel. we all know that classic Chanel like Mickey Mouse only looks good in b&w.

Then there’s Jean Paul Gaultier appropriating Mexican Sombrero’s into his line. Can you imagine white hollywood parading around in these outfits?

Then there’s Christian Dior going way back. Maybe this fulfills his jealousy of not getting the costume gig for My Fair Lady.
come on dudes – can we go fashion forward? and stop with the cultural appropriation!!!

Performance Art is so coming back! Karin Dreijer Andersson of Fever Ray receives the prize for the years best dance artist at “P3 Gold” in Gothenburg. This acceptance speech/performance blows Lady Gaga out of the water. This woman has a melting face underneath her veil. Now i’m not sure if this commentary is related to the French ban on burqa’s but whatever it is she’s got balls!
I love the mood and artistry behind Fever Ray’s videos. Somehow I am imagining these to be the creative result if Bjork went on a date with David Bowie in the world of The Dark Crystal. check out Fever Ray videos.

BECAUSE JOHN DOE IS NOT A HAITIAN NAME
d
a rotting smell
where the school once stood
a hungry shrill
where the guava tree grew
last night before the earth
ate port-au-prince
a bleeding orphan was
somebody’s baby
& that somebody
was pretty or plain
& that somebody
was saucy or shrinking
& that somebody
made love, made mistakes
& that somebody
ate mosquitoes, chewed cane
& léogâne
served the lwa, praised the lord
& jacmel
danced well, clapped instead
& carrefour
had a temper, had a gift
& that somebody atop
a mass grave
knew marie, dieudonne, tantee
knew yves-pierre, jean-jean, timarc
who will christen
those who named us
with intention?
a poet also
died

today young people with hungry eyes reminded me why narrative work is important, why i started to write, why it’s still compelling to me. simply put… because no one else can tell my story…because everyone has a story to tell and everyone’s story is worth telling!
